Vintage Wedding Cakes

While wedding cakes today seem to be getting smaller and smaller (and the frosting on some have even disappeared entirely!), midcentury wedding cakes were quite the spectacle—especially when they were served at the nuptials of famous actresses and royal princesses. Here, 16 of our favorite vintage wedding cakes (including one that would have cost $22,000 in today’s dollars!).

Vintage Wedding Cakes

We get to make lots of wedding cakes during the year, but certain cakes come along and make me so inspired and this cake was one of them!  I loved designing the cake based off of a wedding dress from Anthropologie’s new wedding website BHLDN and then meshing it with the style of the bride’s wedding design.  They were a wonderful couple to work with and I think their wedding just turned out dream-like.  They got married at the gorgeous Rancho Las Lomas and of course has Found Vintage Rentals to deck out the whole venue with their amazing furniture pieces & rentals.  White Haute Photography snapped the stunning images and Larissa from, Inviting Occasions, did the lovely florals.  You can check out all the other great venues down below!

Thanks so much for your sweet comments from our last wedding cake post!  I am excited to share some new designs with you today as well! This first cake design I got inspired to create based off a intricate print.  I loved how the bride & groom silhouettes were surrounded by words that described marriage & their relationship.  I also love the color scheme of blush pink and grey…overall I was quite happy with it! Kyong did a great joy hand painting all the details on this cake…it definitely was a labor of love! These next three cakes were all for one wedding.  The bride couldn’t make up her mind about just one design, so instead we did three completely different techniques on three different cakes for her, while keeping with her same color scheme. Kyong hand painted these gorgeous, delicate branches & added two fondant love birds.  The design matched the bride & groom’s invitation. Up next was a simplistic two tier wedding cake we did for a modern Hawaiian style wedding.  I loved the texture on the cake with the pearlized finish and then we simply accented it with multiple burnt orange sugar flower dahlias. All buttercream cake below with detailed piping that matched the bride’s invitation. The bride wanted lots and lots of gold and that’s what we gave her!  We also incorporated a touch of brown & then a deep red in the garden rose sugar flower. This next cake is a great example of an inexpensive cake that still looks gorgeous…I love the mixture of rustic, yet elegant! My idea of an all-white wedding cake…lots of detail & texture, but still simplistic & modern. I do have to say I love gardenia sugar flowers! This last cake is both elegant and romantic…I love the combination of blush pink & gold together! Thanks so much for stopping by the blog…we’d love to hear which cake was your favorite!

50 of 50 Pop Art Wedding Cakes Inspired by the artwork “Cakes” by American artist Wayne Thiebaud, 1963, this sugary spread by Caitlin Williams Freeman is virtually identical to the original. Let guests serve themselves a helping of whatever strikes their fancy: a slice of lemon-curd cake, a sliver of buttercream-layered sponge cake, a bite of Boston cream pie—or all of the above.

While dessert spreads, cupcakes, and pies have recently made a presence at wedding receptions across the country, most couples still choose to stick to the classic cake. Ahead, delicious creations worthy of our glossy pages, complete with all the colors, flavors, and frostings of your dreams. Plus, find tips on how to have (or make) an identical cake of your own. And if blooms aren’t your thing, ask your baker for another creative idea. The smooth white canvas of this tiered beauty makes the perfect backdrop for any decoration. 21 of 50 Heart Wedding Cake Long ago, the heart was thought to be the origin of all human emotions. Though modern science proves otherwise, the phrase “giving your heart” is still the best way to express that you’d sacrifice anything for the one you love. Jay Qualls of the Tennessee-based Maples Wedding Cakes printed our designs on paper, covered them in parchment, traced them with royal icing, then transferred them onto fondant. 26 of 50 Wedding Cake with Wedding Bells In the old days, church bells were rung to let people in the area know that a wedding had taken place, as well as to wish the newlyweds good luck. Now they’re simply sweet. Kate Sullivan of Lovin Sullivan Cakes (Now Cake Power) in New York City strung graphic golden fondant bells—brushed with edible gold luster dust—from pale blue royal-icing ribbons.

35 of 50 Vintage Graphic Floral Cotton Wedding Cake This stunner of a cake (by Ron Ben-Israel Cakes), with roses that appear to bloom before your very eyes, takes its cues from a swatch of graphic 1960s floral cotton. The leaf and bud designs were photocopied from the fabric to make patterns, then cut out from tinted sugar paste using a craft knife and transferred to the white-fondant-covered tiers. The finishing touch? A sprinkling of yellow sugar-paste roses throughout for an eye-popping embellishment.

Actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward tied the knot on January 29, 1958 with an intimate ceremony at the El Rancho hotel-casino in Las Vegas. Here, they’re seen sharing a sweet kiss in front of their petite wedding cake (compared to other vintage cakes) with a classic bride and groom topper. The happy couple was married for 50 years, until Newman passed away in 2008.
